Approximately two weeks ago, I was able to attend and lecture at the AOAO Annual Conference on cervical spine pathology and symptoms – My portion of the lectures had to do with ACDF with stand-alone interbody or whether a plate for cervical fusions was most effective for this particular pathology. ACDF has always been the “Gold-Standard” for many cervical issues however in recent years, total cervical disk replacement is beginning to emerge as the standard of care.
Cervical disk replacement or Total Disk Replacement (TDR) continues to show promising results but it isn’t for everyone. I currently employ cervical disk replacement in my practice but only for select candidates. This technology is rapidly advancing and of the number of patients that have had cervical disk replacement, the results have been very encouraging.
